The Sustainable Mobility Project (SMP)

The Sustainable Mobility Project (SMP) was established in 2000 to consider how global mobility patterns might evolve in the period to 2030 and beyond, what strategies exist to influence this evolution in ways that might make transport more sustainable, and who (companies & citizens) will manage these strategies to succeed.

Seven (7) are the goals that, if achieved, would improve the prospects for sustainable mobility:

  1. Reduce conventional emissions from transport so that they do not constitute a significant public health concern anywhere in the world.
  2. Limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transport to sustainable levels.
  3. Reduce significantly the number of transport-related deaths and injuries worldwide.
  4. Reduce transport-related noise.
  5. Mitigate traffic congestion.
  6. Narrow “mobility divides” that exist within all countries and between the richest and poorest countries.
  7. Improve mobility opportunities for the general population in developed and developing societies.

Clean Tech Mobility

Mobility is an essential part of society but transport needs to become

  • more efficient,
  • more equitable and
  • less disruptive – both socially and environmentally.

As mobility accelerates worldwide, stakeholders are becoming more concerned about issues such as:

  1. congestion
  2. inadequate infrastructure
  3. land use
  4. noise and pollution
  5. reliance on non-renewable resources.

Current mobility trends are unsustainable, which means that the growing worldwide demand for transportation cannot be met simply by expanding today’s means of transportation.

We must participate in a Sustainable Mobility project immediately in order to address the complex challenges in helping the world achieve:

  • economic growth
  • environmental improvement
  • social progress simultaneously!

Οδηγώντας προς ένα καθαρότερο Περιβάλλον - προς ένα υγιέστερο Μέλλον
(Driving Towards a Cleaner Environment – A Healthier Future)

The Simpli-City and Next-ère made by Eco & Mobility are two vehicles towrds this direction.

Both are lightweight electric cars that are being promoted with the help of recent French presidential candidate Ségolène Royal.
Both cars are made with recyclable materials including hemp fiber and share many components which are mostly sourced close to the area where they were produced.

The Simpli-City (on the left) seats three to four people while the Next-ère is built for two. They are said to have a range between 80 and 150 Km (50 to 90 miles) depending on the type of battery used. Top speed is 55 Mph which is as fast as we think anyone in their right mind would want to go in these. Their price is about €5,000 ($6,834).

STEP 4. We are talking about...

What is MOBILITY?
Mobility is the state of being in motion.
Mobility as a term used in the logistics industry, referring to trucking, shipping, aviation, transport, vehicle rental, etc.

What is Sustainable MOBILITY?
Sustainable Mobility or transport is a concept developed in reaction to things that have gone visibly wrong with transportation policy, practice and performance through much the world over the last half of the 20eth century. Urban transport systems based around the car have proved unsustainable, consuming excessive energy, affecting the health of populations, and delivering a declining level of service despite increasing investments. Many of these negative impacts fall disproportionately on those social groups who are also least likely to own and drive cars.

The sustainable transport movement, part of the
environmental movement, has gradually gained in force over the last decade and a half, and has in the process started to shift the emphasis in public spending and actions away from building and supply, to management and demand. The values of respect for the environment and prudent use of natural resources are central, with varying degrees of urgency expressed by different actors and interests. That said, it is still very much a minority movement and most actual expenditures in the sector are determined by criteria other than sustainability.

What is clear is that sustainable transportation mainly refers to human behavior, not to technology. In that sense, a behavioral approach considers not only a set of non-polluting and human scaled
green transport choices, regardless of the means and technology used, but also a set of reinforcers both individual and social to promote these choices.

The term is also used to describe all forms of transport which minimize fuel consumption and emissions of carbon dioxide and
pollutants.

It can refer to public transport, car sharing, walking and cycling as well as technology such as electric and hybrid cars and biodiesel and Personal Rapid Transit and other green transport.
One early and often cited definition offered back in 1994 by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) defined sustainable transport as: "Transportation that does not endanger public health or ecosystems and meets mobility needs consistent with (a) use of renewable resources at below their rates of regeneration and (b) use of non-renewable resources at below the rates of development of renewable substitutes". This provided a conservative benchmark view of what sustainable transport is all about which is still often put forward in the public debate.

STEP 2 - STUDENTS' INTRODUCTION

OCTOBER: 10th -16 th
The students, introducing themselfves had the opportunity to establish new contacts. For this reason, THEY wrote their text with much care, giving details.

They are very careful. They respected the texts, which had be written by the other students. Each student introduced her/himself (6/7 lines = 100 words), finishing with his/her first name, the name of your country and the announce if she was a woman or he was a man, because the first name is certainly unknown in the other countries. The texts were inserted in the COMMUNICATION AREA of the virtual class.

STEP 1 - STUDENTS' TRAINING

OCTOBER 2008
The students read the students users' manual and opened the TRAINING AREA of the virtual class in order to learn how to use the virtual learning environments WITHOUT DAMAGING SOMEONE'S ELSE CONTRIBUTION.

The students have to INSERT texts in the TRAINING AREA of THEIR virtual class, going to the URL http://wkto.free.fr/ , using their user name and their password.

Every time the students must WRITE the date, the name of their school, the name of their country, their firstnames and the town where they live.

OCTOBER 2008: FORMING INTERNATIONAL GROUPS OF STUDENTS

The students are invited to join a virtual class : 1 to 3 students from each school per virtual class. The firstnames of the Greek students per virtual class are:
  • VTC 105: ANASTASIA
  • VTC 106: BEN, MAC, MARIA
  • VTC 107: NICKY, SOFOULA
  • VTC 108: KONSTANTINA
  • VTC 109: SOFIA CH.
  • VTC 110: KATERINA, CHAROULA
  • VTC 111: CHRISTINA, ELEFTHERIA, STAVROULA

In each virtual class one student is the class manager responsible for keeping the records and for maintaining the communication_area page correctly by checking from the virtual class students' list that all the contributions are dated and signed and are in the right order by date starting at the bottom of the page.

                Eco-Mobility

The project aims at the sensitization -stimulation of students, through the work, research and evidence developed while studying for their essays.

The goal for students is to identify local problems, to investigate, study and suggest solutions to the municipalities on the basis of new technologies application, in a way that harmful environmental impact will be eliminated.

The program runs under the auspices of the european eTwinning program and the programs of school activities and the Enviromental Education of the Ministry of Education of Greece.

INTRODUCTION : Part of our children's future lies in their openings to the outside world, to other ideas, to other cultures; this we can achieve by creating partnership links, exchanges of opinion, comparison of ideas and activities based on collaborative tasks.

It is in such a perspective that this project "SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY" has been organized, to generate an ongoing relationship between language learners from different cultures within the framework of a VIRTUAL CLASS. By operating in a real context, pupils understand the need for working with foreign languages, they see that it is possible to work together and to learn how to write a professional-style report.

This project is a multi-curricula project connected to Foreign Languages subject, to Environment -Sustainable Development and to I.C.T. (information and communication technologies).

This civic program in the English language is aimed at students between the ages of 16 and 20 from high schools and colleges of further education who are not native English speakers. It just need computers connected to the Internet.

Many European Schools involved to the project.
The assignment will follow 13 steps.
Before September 28th the pupils have read users' manual in order to learn how they use the virtual learning environments WITHOUT DAMAGING SOMEONE'S ELSE CONTRIBUTION and in the beginning of October have introduced themselves to each other.
